The Art of Bespoke MGB Restoration: Tradition Meets Innovation at CCHL Hull
Hull, East Yorkshire - November 4 2025
In a year characterised by renewed passion for British Car heritage, CCHL is all set to reveal its most impressive bespoke restoration yet - a complete rebuild of the famous 1967 MGB Roadster, bringing together craftsmanship with modern engineering. The project is a landmark for the East Yorkshire based workshop, celebrating over 30 years of restoration, revamping and reimagining Britain’s most beloved cars.
Reviving a Legend for Today’s Roads
Every MG B that enters CCHL Hull’s doors carries a story — and this one was no exception. The vehicle was located in a leaking barn in South Lincolnshire. It was hidden away for almost two decades. The owner handed over the car to CCHL for a complete ground-up restoration. After more than 1200 laborious hours, the team transformed the weather wrecked relic into a road-ready masterpiece that preserves the model’s iconic profile and augmenting its performance, reliability, and comfort.
“We treat every MG B like a living piece of British history,” says Simon Lucas, Managing Director at CCHL Hull. “Our goal isn’t just to bring these cars back to life — it’s to make them drive as beautifully as they look, ready for the next generation to enjoy.”
CCHL Hull’s process begins with a complete assessment, followed by meticulous disassembly. Using British Motor Heritage body shells as a foundation — in both Roadster and GT forms — the team addresses every panel, seam, and surface by hand. The result is a finish that reflects both precision and passion, ensuring every curve of the MG B remains true to its lineage.
Engineering Precision Meets Modern Innovation
What makes a CCHL restoration stand apart is the company’s ability to enhance authenticity with subtle innovation. The newly completed MG B boasts a 3.5-litre V8 powertrain mated to a five-speed gearbox, delivering a smooth yet exhilarating drive — a far cry from the original four-cylinder setup. Upgraded suspension components from Spax, vented disc brakes, and a stainless-steel exhaust system ensure modern drivability without compromising the car’s character. “Classic cars shouldn’t be fragile museum pieces,” explains Simon Lucas, at CCHL Hull.
“Our restorations aren’t just repair and refit but an as new rebuild- retaining the soul of the MG B while enabling it to hit the modern day roads”. Apart from restoration of these classics, the workshop encompasses discreet electrical upgrades ranging from modern wiring looms to LED lighting systems thus ensuring reliability and safety. Each and every vehicle undergoes a wide-ranging road test that exceeds 500 miles before delivery to check that they performs flawless in real world conditions.
Crafted Interiors: Where Heritage Meets Personal Expression
The attention to the details in the interior is resounding- The restored Roadster features hand-stitched leather upholstery, walnut veneer dashboard, and period-correct instrumentation cluster. Everything is customised as per choices of the customer- from the stitching colour to the steering wheel type - which is one of its kind expression of taste.
The client’s choice for his build was British Racing Green paint alongside tan leather and a bespoke audio system hidden within the original fascia. The result is a perfect blend of nostalgia and modern day refinement- a car that feels luxurious and eternal.
The Open Road Journey
The most cherishing moment came when the owner, a newly recognised MG enthusiast, was handed over the car. After the client’s briefing and his own test drive, he chose to drive the restored MG to London which is just over a 200 miles drive. It shows confidence in the car’s reliability and craftsmanship.
“It’s a feeling that never gets old,” says Simon. “Seeing our clients experience their classic MGs with confidence and joy — that’s why we do what we do.”
